View our video titled "Traditions, Talent, and Teamwork" here. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities THIS IS A TERM APPOINTMENT, NOT-TO-EXCEED 13 MONTHS, THAT CANNOT BE MADE PERMANENT. THE APPOINTMENT MAY BE EXTENDED BY 1 YEAR INCREMENTS WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION, HOWEVER, APPOINTMENT MAY NOT EXCEED A TOTAL OF 4 YEARS. Would you enjoy being responsible for inspection work with an extensive variety of materials and construction operations for the Four Corners Construction Office (FCCO)? The incumbent inspects a variety of contractor's operation and work performed ensuring that engineering drawings, specifications and materials used are in compliance with plans and specifications in connection with the following kinds of work: Earthwork: Selection and processing of earth materials and construction of compacted earth embankment, including: (1) selection, mixing, and moisture control of materials at the borrow area; (2) excavation, preparation, and protection of foundation of the embankment and structures; (3) placement and compaction of earth materials, and placement of riprap; (4) backfill and compaction around structures; (5) placing and protecting drains, instruments, and other embedded items. Concrete: Placing of concrete including: (1) concrete placing, stripping, and curing for canal and pumping plant structures, and concrete canal lining; (2) forming and placing of reinforced steel; (3) installation of gates, valves, machinery, electrical apparatus, and other equipment. Laterals and Pipelines: Installing and backfilling laterals, culverts, siphon pipe and drainage pipes. Mechanical: Installation of pumps, motors, gates, valves, meters, gauges, gate hoists, piping, penstocks, water towers, etc. Electrical: Construction of electrical facilities including (1) power transmission and distribution systems, substations and switchyards; and (2) placing and aligning control equipment including structural steel towers, poles, underground structures, conduits, wiring, stringing, conductor and ground cables, and setting transformers and switchgear. Prepares daily inspection reports and other reports required to reflect inspection results, construction progress, and data for engineering estimates and reports. Notes contacts made with contractor's representatives, matters discussed, and any commitments made. Familiarizes self with safety regulations, safety standards, and safe work practices pertinent to the work being inspected. Advises the contractor of any unsafe conditions or practices noted and reports to the supervisor if corrective action is not taken. Physical Demands The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and stooping during inspection activities. There is some office work (about 10%). Work Environment The work is usually performed outdoors at the construction site (up to 90%), often under disagreeable conditions. Poor footing, steep embankments, frozen ground, construction equipment, and construction activities create a hazardous work environment. Safety precautions are strictly observed and safety hat and safety shoes are worn at all times. Specialized experience must demonstrate the applicant has been equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is directly related to the work to be performed. Specialized experience is further defined as experience in construction inspection of civil construction projects, preferably related to water conveyance systems and associated mechanical and electrical equipment. Inspection work includes inspection of civil, electrical, mechanical and structural aspects of projects (e.g., pumping plants, dams, water treatment plants, pumping stations, pipe lines). With minimal supervisory direction works interpreting plans and specifications in dealing with construction problems and involves contacts with contractor representatives concerning problems of scheduling, interpretation of plans and specifications, selection of work methods and acceptability of materials and workmanship OR 1 full year of graduate level education directly related to the work of this position, such as drafting, surveying, mathematics, physical science, industrial technology, industrial arts, or technical subjects pertinent to construction; or engineering technician work such as electricity, material testing, or engineering mechanics. To qualify for the GS-08 level you must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience must demonstrate the applicant has been equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is directly related to the work to be performed. Specialized experience is further defined as experience in construction inspection of heavy civil construction projects, preferably related to water conveyance systems and associated mechanical and electrical equipment. Inspection work includes inspection of civil, electrical, mechanical and structural aspects of projects (e.g., pumping plants, dams, water treatment plants, pumping stations, pipe lines). Works interpreting plans and specifications in dealing with construction problems and involves contacts with contractor representatives concerning problems of scheduling, interpretation of plans and specifications, selection of work methods and acceptability of materials and workmanship OR 2 full years of graduate level education directly related to the work of this position, such as drafting, surveying, mathematics, physical science, industrial technology, industrial arts, or technical subjects pertinent to construction; or engineering technician work such as electricity, material testing, or engineering mechanics. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmericCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
