The AirCare and Trauma manager leads by directing each action, each process, and all resources towards safety—safety of the patient, flight, and safety above all. Maintaining and promoting the highest level of safety will drive quality in every aspect of the services provided.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • 5 years’ experience in air medical field
  • Registered Nurse License in New Mexico OR
  • Paramedic License in New Mexico
  • Leadership experience
  • Demonstration effective interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivation and accountability
  • Team Orientation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • BSN
  • Clinical Certification in area of specialty
  • ACLS, PALS or PEPP, and NRP Certifications
  • New Mexico Class A & B Underground Tank Operator Certification

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaches the importance of safety to each staff member and demands each staff member be responsible for all aspects of safety
  • Organizes, coordinates and directs daily activities for staff
  • Formulates work schedules and assigns staff
  • Develops annual budget and manages expenses and revenue
  • Oversees compliance and functionality of departmental patient care documentation system, develops charge master, assists with insurance reimbursement and denials
  • Coordinates with San Juan County Finance to develop annual county budget
  • Negotiates contract with aviation operator
  • Works closely with the Lead Pilot to define schedules and duties for contracted staff
  • Reviews aircraft function, maintenance and capabilities to renew/replace avionics, components or aircraft as necessary
  • Works closely with Chief Nursing Officer and medical directors to define staff development and departmental goals
  • Oversees annual SJRMC Trauma and Critical Care Conference
  • Coordinates and directs Regional Trauma Advisory Council to meet state DOH requirements
  • Leads staff and physicians to meet standards to maintain Level III Trauma Center Accreditation and maintain accreditation by Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services
  • Authors, maintains and revises departmental policies
  • Evaluates work performance of supervisors and staff
  • Develops and oversees quality/safety initiatives
  • Directs care and maintenance of helipad, underground jet fuel storage and refueling system, hanger, offices, airport hangar and crew quarters as well as patient care and operational equipment
  • Stays current with industry standards and innovation and assures compliance with same
  • Monitors customers within SJRMC and other facilities to strategically maintain and improve market share
  • Consistently displays a commitment to improving quality performance and actively participates in departmental and organizational quality initiatives

Physical Demands and Environmental Work Conditions:

  • Must be able to see with corrective eyewear and hear clearly with assistance
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist frequently
  • Must be able to lift greater than 50 pounds and push 0-300 pounds frequently
  • Potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids and meets OSHA training requirements

Special Demands:

  • Sets limits when dealing with angry, hostile, or sometimes verbally or physically abusive patients and families in an attempt to ensure a safe, respectful environment that will support the delivery of care
  • Effectively copes and strives for balance when caring for acutely ill patients and families
